Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane pointed out that he doesn’t need reinforcements to win silverware this season, and he’s grateful to Orlando Pirates for participating in the CAFCL.
He had only signed three players, Fiston Abdoul Razak, Soumahoro Bangaly, and Columbian Leonardo Castro, while Mogakolodi Ngele and Keagan Dolly had been signed in January and loaned back to Platinum Stars and Ajax Cape Town respectively.
“We have been drawn against a very good side,” Mosimane said. “In fact, I think our draw is tougher than (Kaizer) Chiefs. Chicken Inn is not an easy team.”
He pointed to the team’s success record –ending the reign of Dynamos who had won the league the previous four seasons.
“They are a young team, and we signed Kuda Mahachi from them. We are doing our homework, but we also have held our pre-season camps in Zimbabwe the past two years, and we are quite familiar with the environment and the stadium, which is more like Orlen Park, the stadium Jomo Cosmos use in Potchefstroom.”
But more importantly, Mosimane has thanked Orlando Pirates for maintaining the berths allocated for South African teams’ participation in CAF competitions.
Pirates success in reaching the CAF Confederation Cup final has ensured there is space for two South African clubs to participate in the CAF Champions League and a further two allocations in the CAF Confederation Cup for both 2017 and 2018.
“I want to congratulate Eric (Tinkler) and Orlando Pirates for giving us a chance to go to CAF,” Mosimane said. “They gave us the opportunity to go there again next year after the accumulated points. They might have lost in the final, but they are doing the country a favour.
“They gave us an opportunity to have two teams in the CAF Champions League, including Kaizer Chiefs, and gave Wits another opportunity to be in the Confederations Cup because they didn’t win any cup last year.
“Pirates have really given a chance for us change our mentality in Africa. We are doing our best at Sundowns – it’s difficult, but we have to try our best…I have always said that we should copy and congratulate Eric and Pirates for giving us the opportunity to be in CAF and accumulating points for the country.”
