South Africa under-23 and newly signed Orlando Pirates defender Abbubakar Mobara has received much credit for how he helped 10-men Amaglug-glug draw against Brazil.
They shut out the hosts 0-0 in their opening Men’s Olympic game on Thursday night.
The former Ajax Cape Town player, who only moved to Pirates in this window, was named the man of the match at right back. He was the one entrusted to stop Brazil star Neymar.
“This is a team sport,” said Mobara to the media.
“Besides my performance, I think the support and belief from the coach and technical staff brought out a lot in us, and the confidence and spirit was high in the team.
“Confidence wise, not just from me but from a team perspective, I think the team did exceptionally well despite the result. The fighting spirit was there and, even after going down by one man, the fighting spirit lifted even more.
“I think if we can continue on from this performance throughout the tournament then we can perform brilliantly.”
South Africa take on Denmark in their next game, hoping for a victory to help progress the nation to the next round.
