Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi is set to be rewarded for his outstanding form for Chelsea this season with a new contract, The Mirror reports.
The 28-year-old started the 2015/16 campaign on the fringes of the team as former manager Jose Mourinho preferred Nemanja Matic and former Arsenal Captain Cesc Fabregas as the central midfielders.
However, the fortune of the Nigerian changed under care-taker boss Guus Hiddink who immediately made him the anchor person in the middle for the Blues and he hasn’t disappointed, churning out some immaculate performances which he capped recently with a vital away goal in the UEFA Champions League against Paris Saint German.
The former Lyn Oslo star still has 15 months left on his current contract at Stamford Bridge after he renewed for another five years in 2012.
Mikel played for 82 minutes for the Blues as they hammered Manchester City 5-1 in the FA Cup fifth round match.
The game witnessed Eden Hazard score his first goal of the season for the Blues after a poor season for the Premier League player of the season last term.
Nigerian youngster Kelechi Iheanacho was helpless as he was surrounded by five debutante in the City line-up as manager Manuel Pellegrini decided to rest senior players for their UEFA Champions League game in midweek.
