Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has rued their failure to qualify for the final of the Rio Olympic Games.
Nigeria were beaten 2-0 by Germany in the semifinal on Wednesday, which ruined their hopes of a Gold medal finish like they did 20 years ago in Atlanta.
Speaking after the game, the 29-year old admitted they didn’t play well on the day, while also admitting that the Germans played better.
“I wanted to win the gold medal, but the fact that we did not play well today. The Germans played well,” Mikel said at the post-match press conference
The Chelsea midfielder has been one of the better performers for the Nigerian side since the start of the Games, and ahead of the bronze medal match against Honduras, he says they have to claim the bronze and give a medal to Nigeria.
“We are professionals, we can now claim third place and this is what we get . We want to give a medal to Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s conquerors Germany, will play in the final against hosts Brazil on Saturday.
