English Premier League side Chelsea have once again lauded the performance of their midfielder and Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel despite Nigeria’s semifinal loss to Germany at the ongoing Olympic Games.
The Dream Team were beaten 2-0 by their German counterparts, killing off hopes of a Gold medal finish, but the English club were full of praise for the 29-year old and his Nigerian teammates.
“Nigeria earned great credit for solidifying their defence and preserving possession as Germany once again demonstrated their tournament expertise,” the club wrote on its website.
“Mikel came close to scoring an equaliser on several occasions, notably when he humbled two defenders with a beautiful dribble into the box but saw a deflection deny him and, in the second half, smashing the side netting from a free kick.
“The experience of Mikel continued to shine through as he skippered the side from an advanced position behind the Nigerian front line, featuring the AS Roma striker Sadiq Umar.”
The former English champions have been steadfast in their support and praise for their Nigerian midfielder as well as a bunch of the Nigerian players at the Games.
Meanwhile, the loss means Nigeria will now face Honduras in the Bronze medal match on Saturday, while hosts Brazil face Germany in the final.
