Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel wept uncontrollably following the defeat to Germany in the semifinals of the Rio Olympics, fcnaija.com has learnt.
The 29-year old has won all of football’s team trophies except the World Cup and Olympic Games Gold, and was looking to add the Olympics Gold to his collection, which he said would be the highlight of his career.
But following the loss to Germany in the semifinal, the midfielder was inconsolable as he wept uncontrollably after the game.
“Mikel was really crying after the game,” one of the players informed fcnaija.com.
“I and the other guys were really surprised because we really didn’t expect it, but he was really crying and we all felt bad because we lost the game,” he said.
This much was also confirmed the team’s press officer, Timi Ebikagboro, who said: “You know a player who hates defeat after a game, Mikel was a sorry sight as he wept uncontrollably after the game, not even the sports Minister, the PS (permanent secretary) or even the NFF president could console him, it was really emotional, Odogwu as your fellow players call you, a hero you are.”
Mikel is one of only two over-aged players in the Nigeria squad, and has been largely impressive for the Dream Team.
They will play Honduras in the Bronze medal match on Saturday.
