Nigerian midfielder, John Obi Mikel is on the verge of joining the exclusive list of players to have featured in all six 11-a-side world football competitions.
For now, the likes of Ronaldinho are on that exclusive list and Mikel could be joining the big boys if Coach Samson Siasia selects him as one of the three over-aged players for the Rio 2016 assignment.
Recall that Mikel finished behind Lionel Messi in ratings at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup but the Chelsea star has attended five FIFA organised competitions compared to Messi’s four and Mikel could even go a step higher if he is included in the roster for Rio Olympics by Coach Samson Siasia.
Messi who is a well-acclaimed global phenomenon, has featured in four major world football tournaments: World Cup (2006, 2010, 2014), Olympic tournament (2008), U-20 World Cup (2005), Club World Cup (2009, 2011, 2015).
Should Mikel feature at the Olympics, he will join the likes of Ronaldinho among those to have featured in all the six 11-a-side world football competitions – World Cup (2014), FIFA Confederation Cup (2013), FIFA Club World Cup (2012), Olympics (2016?), U-20 (2005) and U-17 (2003).
