Argentine star Lionel Messi was on show as Argentina progressed to the 2016 Copa America final courtesy of a 4 – 0 win over hosts USA early on Wednesday 22 June and he couldn’t hide his joy at the progress.
The Barcelona striker started the tournament with injury but has managed to show his prowess on the way to the final and in the semi he provided two assists and a goal to see his side through.
Speaking afterwards, he termed it a big merit getting to the final but having fallen in the last two finals – against Germany in the 2014 World Cup and Chile in the 2015 Copa America, he is keen to avoid a repeat.
“To be in three straight finals has a lot of merit,” said Messi following the match. “Making the final was the objective, this team always wants more, again we’re in the final and hopefully we will win it.
“This team deserves it because this team does things well both in attack and defence. We are eager and we have a lot of hope for this cup.” He added.
A win in the final will end a 23 – year wait for a major title by the Albiceleste.
