Lionel Messi has announced that he has retired from international football following Argentina’s loss in the Copa America final at the hands of Chile early on Monday 27 June in New Jersey , USA.
Messi had an outstanding tournament in the Copa America Centenario but his good run came to a crashing end in the final as the Albiceleste faced off with Chile for the second straight final and second time in this tournament after rising from the same group in the first round.
The Barcelona star featured full time as the two teams played to a barren draw in regular and extra time and took the honors to take the first penalty kick but missed it as Argentina went on to lose 4 – 2.
In an interview immediately after the match, the Argentina captain announced he will be retiring from international football after the tournament.
Messi had a rant at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) ahead of the final and moments after the final he did an interview with Argentina’s TyC Sports where he announced that he would no longer play for the national team.
“For me the national team is over. I’ve done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion,” Messi said.
The 29-year-old was making his 112th appearance for Argentina since making his debut in 2005.
It’s possible that this decision was made in the heat of the moment, after an emotional defeat that extended the team’s wait for a major title for a good 23 years.
