According to The Mirror, Manchester United are planning a £25m bid for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
The French defender was scouted in 2011 but then manager Alex Ferguson ended up signing Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers for £16m while Varane moved to the Bernabeu.
But with Jones out injured for most part of the season, Dutch midfielder midfielder Daley Blind has partnered Chris Smalling for most of the season.
However, with Mourinho’s continued link with Louis van Gaal’s job – Varane’s speculations is back on as the Portuguese once described him as ‘the best young defender in the world’ in March 2014.
Varane remains highly thought of across Europe, but he has been rotated alongside Sergio Ramos and Pepe in the heart of Real’s defence this season, while he would be a leader of the Red Devils’ back line.
The 23-year-old has already captained France twice, becoming the youngest player to do so against Armenia in October 2015, and has the potential to form a formidable partnership with Smalling.
Manchester United are in danger of not qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season as they are currently placed fifth on the premier league log with 63 points and only a game left to be played this campaign.
