Debutant Charlie Austin was the hero for Southampton as they beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford this afternoon.
Manchester United named only one change to the team that defeated Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield last week with youngster Cameron Borthwick-Jackson coming in for the injured Ashley Young.
Southampton were conscious with their approach and played into the home sides hand who likes a controlled game but Old Trafford fans were not having any of it as they booed out loud with a big screams ‘sack, sack, sack!’ – that motivated the away side who pushed forward for the opening goal.
Senegalese star Saido Mane had the best opportunity of the first half after he was put through by Shane Long but he failed to control the ball with only David de Gea in front of him.
Juan Mata replace Marouane Fellaini and the Red Devils picked up pace and the Spaniard nearly put the home side in front but his effort was blocked for a corner. It almost goes from bad to worse for United as Wanyama heads just wide from Tadic’s corner after Long’s effort from the initial set piece was deflected wide.
With three minutes to full-time new Southampton signing Charlie Austin headed in from a freekick to give the away side a sweet 1-0 victory at Old Trafford and the boos rang out again for manager Louis van Gaal who is already under huge pressure to improve results.
