Marcus Rashford made an unforgettable Manchester derby debut as he grabbed the only goal in United’s win over City.
Louis van Gaal’s men lost their last premier league game 1-0 t West Brom and were determined to recover in a bid to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League having been eliminated from the Europa League by Liverpool.
Jesus Navas was first to have a sight of goal as he brought down the ball on his chest but his half volley went wide. The home side continued to put pressure on the visitors and Chris Smalling was booked for a foul on Sergio Aguero. The Argentine spins away from him, though, and the England man tugged him back to earn the card.
At the other end a quick break from the Red Devils saw wonderkid Marcus Rashford produced a solo effort as he danced past Martin Demichelis before placing the ball beyond Joe Hart to give the visitors the lead. And thus became the youngest ever goalscorer in a Manchester derby.
Raheem Sterling limped off as he was replaced by Fernando – the England man never fully recovered from a challenge by Juan Mata. On the stroke of half-time United had a shout for a penalty as Rashford was bungled over by Demichelis but the referee looked away.
The second half was filled with drama as both sides came out fighting. The home side lost Joe Hart to injury and stretchered for Willy Caballero. The former Malaga goalkeeper was immediately called into action as he saved a curler from Anthony Martial.
Manchester City’s best chance fell to Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero who he connected a sublime cross from Captain of the day Yaya Toure with a swift header but it came off the bar after beating David de Gea on his near post.
Matteo Darmian was replaced by Timothy Fosu-Mensah after he suffered a slight knock. City pile on pressure in the final stages of the game but the Red Devils held on for a vital win that took them within one point of the Citizens in the race for a Champions League spot.
