Excitement continues to build as the new Absa Premiership season looms large, with kick-off set for next Tuesday, 23 August 2016.
With eight days to go to what will be the official start of the 2016/17 Premier Soccer League (PSL) calendar, clubs are now putting the final touches on their preparations.
While 15 of the 16 league clubs have been playing friendly games over the past three months, reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns have been keeping busy via their progression in Africa.
The Brazilians are in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League and will seemingly be best prepared to tackle the season full on.
Pitso Mosimane’s men, however, will not be in action when the first round of games are played next week due to their continental commitments – they have a date in Nigeria with Enyimba on Tuesday to conclude the formality of group matches, which they already have reached, before the semi-finals next month.
But there will be plenty of other action to look forward to, with four matches scheduled for the opening day of action next Tuesday, including a first glimpse of promoted Baroka FC and the PSL’s newest franchise, Cape Town City.
Bakgaga will be at home to Ajax Cape Town at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, whilst City, previously known as Mpumalanga Black Aces, will welcome Polokwane City to the Cape Town Stadium.
Also on Tuesday, two teams expected to be Sundowns’ biggest title threats – Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs – come up against each other at the Bidvest Stadium.
The final match on the first night of action will see Chippa United take on Free State Stars at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
There are three more matches on Wednesday with Orlando Pirates playing Lamontville Golden Arrows in Soweto, Platinum Stars up against SuperSport United at Royal Bafokeng Stadium and Bloemfontein Celtic to take on Maritzburg United at Dr. Molemela Stadium.
All the matches kick-off at 19h30.
