Jamie Carragher has revealed Liverpool considered signing West Ham playmaker Dimitri Payet five years before he joined West Ham.
The former Marseille player has been out of the standout performers of the season so far, shining in wins over Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City combining well with Nigeria’s Victor Moses to destroy premier league defenders..
Carragher, who is now a pundit has claimed that Liverpool were keeping tabs on Payet right back in 2010 but a move failed to materialise.
“The way Payet has played since arriving at Upton Park — he has been one of the top three or four performers in the Barclays Premier League so far — has captured the imagination and given Bilic’s reign some much-needed early momentum.
“Payet, a midfielder I know Liverpool looked at five years ago when he played for Saint-Etienne, was superb in both those games [against Arsenal and Liverpoool], as he was against Manchester City in their other big, unexpected away win,” he writes in his Mail column.
West Ham are currently second on the premier league after beating Chelsea 2-1 at Upton Park.
