Barclays Premier League side Liverpool FC is reported to be closing in on 30 – year old Estonia international Ragnar Klavan for a fee reported to be in the region of £4.2m.
Klavan, a central defender who turns out for Bundesliga side Augsburg is being shopped for as cover for Frenchman Mamadou Sakho, who is expected to miss the start of the season with an Achilles tendon injury.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is also looking to strengthen his defensive options after Ivorian defender Kolo Toure was released at the end of last season and Martin Skrtel sold to Fenerbahce in the past week.
Should he join, Klavan would be the Reds’ fourth signing of the summer after Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius, Schalke centre-back Joel Matip and Southampton forward Sadio Mane this summer.
The Reds, home to Kenyan born Belgian international Divock Origi, will start its 2016/17 campaign with a game against Arsenal on Sunday 14 August.
