Manchester City are the League Cup champions, after defeating the Reds 3-1 on penalties at Wembley.
With Jurgen Klopp aiming for an early trophy in his early Liverpool career, and Manuel Pellegrini looking for one final piece of silverware before giving away to Pep Guardiola, both managers had their eyes on the prize.
City knew this could be their best chance at silverware too, since it’s tremendously difficult to win the Champions League away from the giants in La Liga or the Bundesliga recently.
The Reds usually win dramatic penalty shoot-out finals so it was rare to see them end up on the losing side, particularly since the game seemed to have all the hallmarks of a famous Liverpool win.
Klopp’s men controlled the first half, dominating City in the tactical department but never had a cutting edge to their game.
However they failed to show up in the second half, as Simon Mignolet gifted City the lead by missing an easy near post shot from Fernandinho in the 49th minute.
The Manchester club should’ve wrapped the game up with clear opportunities thereafter, particularly two big chances that Raheem Sterling somehow didn’t even hit the target with. Those could’ve been match losing moments.
Even though Mignolet was the culprit, he produced a few brilliant stops too, one-handed saves to deny the likes of Sergio Aguero.
City also should’ve had a penalty when Moreno attempted a fancy backheel tackle that the referee missed.
With seven minutes to go, Coutinho made them pay as substitute Lallana hit the bar and the Brazilian side-footed the equaliser.
Origi could’ve won it for the Reds on a few occasions in the dying moments and in extra time, but Caballero stopped him from close range, a header as well, then on other occasions the Belgian stretched but just couldn’t manage to get enough on it to push it past the Argentine.
City had their moments too and the drama deserved a penalty shoot-out. It wasn’t Mignolet’s chance at redemption, instead it was Caballero who produced three great saves to stop Lucas, Coutinho and Lallana.
