Wayne Rooney netted his 241st goal for Manchester United as he helped them win the 194th 1-0 against Liverpool at Anfield.
The home side were off the blocks quicker than Red Devils and cost them trouble each time they poured forward. Brazilian midfielder Lucas sent a fine ball over the top for Adam Lallana through the middle, but he couldn’t steer his header past De Gea who made a smart save on the edge of the box.
Lallana gathers the second ball and gives it to Firmino, but his low strike goes just past the post with De Gea out of position.
Liverpool continued with the better chances of the encounter as Lucas, Henderson, Lallana and Firmino all combined with one-touch passes into the area. Firmino slides the final ball in to Henderson, who drags his low effort narrowly past the far post.
The 194th derby between these two was proving exciting for the Anfield fans but it was early showers for Ashley Young as he picked up and injury and was substituted by youngster Cameron Borthwick-Jackson as the first half ended goalless.
Liverpool came out in the second period even more blistering as they poured forward again in search of the game’s opening goal. Emre Can pulled away from Smalling but his left foot shot was saved by de Gea, the Manchester United goalkeeper produced an ever better save minutes later.
Can again blasted a shot from 20 yards that de Gea parried and saved the rebound to keep the scores goalles. Louis van Gaal brought on Juan Mata for the ineffective Jesse Lingard.
United best chance from the entire game came from their most dangerous player on the pitch Anthony Martial as he wriggled past a sea of legs before flashing a left foot shot past Simon Mignolet but it went wide for a goal kick.
But against the run of play Manchester United won a corner kick and Daley Blind played in a shot one into Juan Mata who sent in a delicious cross that Marouane Fellaini headed onto the post and Wayne Rooney finished off the rebound to net his first goal at Anfield for eleven years and a precious winner.
