Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun could only watch from the bench as his club FSV Mainz 05 were humbled 2-0 at their home ground by Borussia Dortmund on Friday night.
Dortmund before the trip to Coface Arena had gone three Bundesliga matches without a win and were already losing pace with Bayern Munich at the top of the log.
However, Marco Reus started the scoring before missing a penalty early in the second half, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan struck in the closing stages to ensure Thomas Tuchel celebrated a win on the return to his former club.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when a mistake from Niko Bungert proved to be key as he gifted the ball to Henrikh Mkhitaryan, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang spotted the right pass to allow Marco Reus to slot home.
Reus had the chance to increase the tally from the penalty spot, but when he stepped up from 12 yards, Mainz keeper, Loris Karius guessed correctly to make the save and Park Joo-ho could only slice the rebound wide of the post
Aubameyang having failed to get a goal to his name provided an assist for Mkhitaryan, who calmly took the ball past Karius and tapped in to wrap up the win.
