Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun came in as an 83rd minute substitute as his current club Mainz 05 recorded a 3-2 away win over his former employers, Darmstadt in their Friday night Bundesliga clash at the Merck-Sthicadion am Böllenfalltor (Darmstadt).
Friday’s outing is the sixth of the season for Balogun; albeit four appearances were made from the bench.
After initial hiccups, Mainz went in front through Stefan Bell when he headed home Danny Latza’s free kick on 15 minutes for his first goal of the season.
Despite the dominant display by the home side, it was Mainz who doubled their lead in the 24th minute as Yunus Malli curled home from the edge of the box.
Interestingly, Mainz two-goal advantage lasted less than two minutes, as Marcel Heller helped reduce the deficit.
The home side then levelled the game when half-time substitute Marco Sailer stabbed home Konstantin Rausch’s left-wing cross.
However, the joy of Dirk Schuster’s team was short-lived as they found themselves behind again when they failed to clear the ball, allowing de Blasis to fire home what turned out to be the winning goal.
The derby win has see Mainz climb to fifth place in the Bundesliga, with 12 points from their opening eight games.
