Former England international Frank Lampard insists Wayne Rooney still has a lot to offer in the Three Lions team despite a poor show at the Euro 2016 Championships as England bowed out at the last 16 stage.
England were beaten 2 – 1 by minnows Iceland in what has been termed the lowest point in the history of sports in England and immediately after the match a scrutiny of the players’ futures started.
German legend Lothar Mathaus said it is time the Manchester United man called time on his career but Lampard feels otherwise and states that his experience will be key for the team at this stage.
“He’s our talisman, he’s our greatest goalscorer, he’s experienced and you don’t want that to walk away at this stage,” Lampard told BBC Sport.
“I would want him in the team and in the squad. He has certainly got another tournament in him.”
“I think once we reflect a bit more, Wayne will remain a big player in the squad and will help with the development of the younger players around him.” He said.
