Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia’s hunt for their 16th title got back in the right track on Sunday 24 July with a last gasp win over City Stars at the Nyayo National Stadium.
The champions went to the match on the back of two straight draws but had a good start with Harun Shakava opening the scores but that did not last long as the team’s former player Ezekiel Odera leveled matters with a beautiful goal. Collins Okotyh stepped up with a goal on the 90th minute that bagged three points.
In Mombasa, hosts Bandari FC managed to put a stop to their bad run with a 2 – 1 win over Muhoroni Youth in an ill tempered match that saw both sides finish with ten men. Bandari skipper Wilson Obungu was sent off on the 71st minute before Wycliffe Ochomo followed suit on the 90th minute.
In Nakuru, Ulinzi Stars got back to winning ways after failing in the previous three matches and they needed a hat trick from John Mark Makwatta to secure the win though Kennedy Oduor and Maurice Odipo’s goals ensures no clean sheet for the hosts.
In Machakos, Sofapaka missed a great opportunity to actualize their survival dream by drawing with Tusker. Moses Odhiambo scored to give Sofapaka the lead but Shafik Batambuze leveled matters.
In the Saturday matches, Nigerian forward Ichi Chibueze had the perfect start to life in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) scoring on of the goals as he helped his Thika United team to a 2 – 0 win over Mathare United.
Chibueze, signed in the mid season transfer window, had been locked out for the opening three matches of the second leg but after getting cleared on Thursday, was handed a start just two days later and he didn’t disappoint, opening the scoring for his new team on his debut in the 78th minute. Eugene Mukangula netted the second.
In the other matches played on the day, Ugandan forward Allan Kateregga scored a second minute goal that was enough to see AFC Leopards bag a 1 – 0 win over the visiting Sony Sugar at the Nyayo National Stadium.
In Kisumu County, Western Stima played to their second successive barren draw agfter being held at home by Posta Rangers while in Awasi, Charles Momanyi scored the lone goal as Kakamega Homeboyz beat hosts Chemelil Sugar at the Chemelil Sports Complex.
