The reigning Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Maiha’s race to bag a fourth straight league title is well on course after the champions overtook Tusker to ensure they finish top of the log at the midway point in the season.
Gor Mahia beat bottom of the log side, Sofapaka 2 – 0 in the league match staged at the Moi Stadium Kisumu to go top of the log.
Ugandan international Khalid Aucho, once a target for Sofapaka, netted the opening goal on just the fifth minute of the match and his skipper Musa Mohamed made it two with a clinical finish.
The loss for Sofapaka meant for the first time in the team’s history in the top flight, the 2009 KPL champions will spend the midseason break in the relegation region, having managed just two wins and a draw in the season so far.
Gor Mahia’s rise to the top was helped on strongly by the fact that Tusker FC, their realest challengers, dropped two points against AFC Leopards in the 2 – 2 result registered at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
Alfred Wekesa scored for AFC Leopards before Shafiq Batambuze restored parity. But then Allan Kateregga thought he had won the points for Leopards with a late goal but no sooner had the celebrations stopped than Anthony Ndolo stopped in to get the equalizer.
