AFC Leopards’ quest to claim the KPL U20 title ended in futility as the team, backed the favorites, were eliminated at the quarter final stage in one of the matches staged at Camp Toyoyo on Sunday 24 April.
Gor Mahia saw off Chemelil Sugar 3 – 1 in the first quarter final. It was Chemelil who took the lead on the 15th minute through Felix Oluoch but Amos Nondi restored parity in the 61st minute. Gor Mahia then took the lead through Wilson Mwendwa with a 73rd minute penalty before Joseph Waruinge nailed the millers out with a goal just two minutes to the end.
The second quarter final match was the only one that ended goalless; AFC Leopards and Mathare United playing to a barren draw before Mathare United stepped up to beat Ingwe 4 – 1 on post match penalties.
In the third quarter final, City Stars were a pale shadow of the team that beat Thika United 6 – 2 in their last outing as they fell 1 – 3 to Ulinzi Stars. Ulinzi opened the scoring in the first minute through Dennis Ouma and Alex Sunga netted a brace to condemn Samuel Wailer’s goal to a mere consolation.
Sony Sugar’s quest to make it to the second final in three edition ended at the quarter final stage. The Junior Millers had the say at the start and got a goal for it on the 25th minutes but Kakamega Homeboyz struck from the spot on the 35th minute for the leveler before Alvine Mangeni scored a late winner.
