Kenyan defender Brian Mandela picked his Premier Soccer League (PSL) club Maritzburg United from the jaws of defeat with a late goal to secure a point against Platinum Stars in a league match staged at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday 20 December.
The teams played to a goalless first half and it stayed so until the 77th minute when Vuyo Mere opened the scores for the hosts and just when they thought they had bagged an important win, Madela stepped up to spoil their party.
The Kenyan international got to the end of Kurt Lentjies’ delivery from a free kick on 88 minutes to level matters, but most importantly help Maritzburg, who have not had the best of starts to a season, bag a point from a losing position.
Despite the draw, Maritzburg is still languishing at the bottom of the PSL log with just six points from 12 matches while Platinum Stars are fifth with 19 points having played a game less.
Mandela’s Maritzburg will next face Supersport on Sunday 10 January.
