Alex Iwobi is being celebrated by his club Arsenal following his first international goal that secured Nigeria a comfortable away win in Sunday’s 2018 World Cup qualifiers against the Chipolopolo of Zambia.
The Nigerian international who made his debut as a 57th minute replacement in a 2–0 friendly defeat to DR Congo in Visé, Belgium capitalized on a poor clearance by the Zambians to hit home a volley for the opener in Ndola.
Arsenal in a message on its official twitter handle wrote: “#BIG17 has scored his first international goal – and Nigeria lead Zambia 2-0 at half-time in their World Cup qualifier.”
The second goal for Nigeria came in the 42nd minute from Iheanacho who played a one-two pass with Ideye before rounding the Zambian keeper to slot home from close range.
Zambia rallied after the break with Collins Mbesuma reducing the deficit but Iwobi who bagged 90 minutes of action and his Super Eagles team-mates held off the home side’s pressure to win 2-1 and go top of group B with Algeria and Cameroon set to play later in the day.
