Super Eagles and Watford striker Odion Ighalo has been nominated for the Barclays Premier League September Player of the Month award.
The Nigerian international scored three goals in three games for the Hornets last month, including a match-winning double during the excellent 2-1 away win over Newcastle United.
Ighalo’s other goal was his memorable strike against Swansea City at Vicarage Road, which ensured Watford secured their first three points of the season.
Also on the shortlist are Jamie Vardy of Leicester City, Dimitri Payet of West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris and Manchester United duo Anthony Martial and Daley Blind.
Despite Sergio Aguero’s five goals against Newcastle last time out, Ighalo remains the Premier League striker with more English league goals than the Argentine this year. Ighalo’s equaliser for Watford against Bournemouth took his tally for the calendar year to 21 goals to become is the country’s top scorer in 2015.
Ighalo who carried his fine form to the international stage, scoring one of the three goals in Nigeria’s win over Cameroon in an international friendly last Sunday will hope to bag the monthly award when the winner is announced on Friday morning.
Ighalo joined Watford on a season-long loan deal from Udinese on 29 July 2014. Three months later, Watford terminated his loan and re-signed him on a permanent deal the same day after Udinese released him from his contract.
Having impressed the Hornets’ hierarchy with his abilities in front goal, the Nigerian was rewarded with a five years contract last month.
