Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been handed an extended break and will not travel with the rest of the Manchester United squad to China for their pre-season tour of the Asian country, it has been revealed.
The Daily Mail reports that the Swede has been given more time off by Jose Mourinho as he continues his holiday in the United States.
The development is sure to disappoint fans in China, who would have expected to see the 35-year old who only recently signed a one-year contract with the Red Devils.
According to FIFA guidelines, players must be given a minimum three-week break after an international tournament, and it is now at the discretion of the club to extend the break if they so wish.
Ibrahimovic led Sweden to the recently concluded Euros in France, as they failed to progress beyond the group stages and he has since been holidaying in America after putting pen to paper on the deal with United following his exit from French champions PSG.
United are still without several of their top stars who featured at the Euros and Copa America, with the likes of captain Wayne Rooney, David De Gea, Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero yet to join after representing their countries this summer.
Supporters in China hoping to catch a glimpse of Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be heartbroken to hear the Manchester United striker will not travel with the club for their eight-day tour of the country.
Ibrahimovic is now expected to make his first appearance for the club against Galatasaray, when both sides meet in Sweden on July 30 or against Everton on August 3.
Mourinho had said in an interview with MUTV that he wants his players to gel together before the new Premier League campaign.
“I am taking the English boys – that I wasn’t expecting but they’re coming. I take them but I’m not going to play them,” he said.
“What is more important is to work, to be together, to live together 24 hours every day during the week and finally when you come back from China is when the others are waiting for us.”
