It was a sorry scene on Wednesday during the Nigeria Professional Football League match between Kano Pillars and Enyimba in Kano as home fans nearly turned the epic game into nasty episode.
The Aba Elephants went into the game at the back of a three-match unbeaten streak while Pillars had won away in Akure against Sunshine Stars and began the game on the front foot as Captain Rabiu Ali put the host in front.
But Enyimba was determined to climb off the bottom half of the league as Nzube Anaezemba scored the equalizer in the 51st minute before Ike ThankGod grabbed the second in the 82nd minute to make it 2-1.
Kano fans turned violent as they sensed a first home defeat of the season and the chance to go top of the log slipping away and resulted to throwing stones at the assistant referee and that forced the game to be held up for ten minutes.
At the end of 90 minutes, the four official signalled for eight more minutes but Enyimba held on to earn their first win in Kano against the Masu Gida side.
The current champions were unable to leave the stadium for closed to an hour but thankfully no players were injured during the fans rage but same cannot be said for the bus driver Mr Enyinnaya Nwankpa who was covered in his own blood after some heavily beating.
The home fans smashed the cars of Enyimba’s official. Fear filled the team as most of the Aba Elephant players feared the worst and waited in their dressing room until the angry fans went away.
However, Kudos must be given to security operatives who rescued Enyimba initially from the pitch and last provided six escort vans to follow the visitors to the Kaduna express way and off to Aba.
The League Management Company (LMC) is expected to launch a formal investigation into the incident and may apply heavy sanctions to the guilty party.
