Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia wrapped up a weekend of shocks in the third round of the GOtv Shield, after suffering a 0 – 1 loss to second tier side Nzoia United FC in the Sunday 28 August clash staged at the Mumias Sports Complex.
Gor Mahia went to the clash the more fancied side but a slow start allowed Nzoia much room and the Bungoma based team grew in confidence, eventually winning a 30th minute penalty after Ernest Wendo’s handball in the box.
The penalty was expertly slotted home by Edgar Nzano for the goal that stood to the end of the clash, extending Gor Mahia’s poor run of form in the recent past.
In the other matches, defending champions Bandari moved a step closer to retaining their title after beating Bidco United 1 – 0 in Mombasa, courtesy of Musa Mudde’s goal.
Another second tier side, Kariobangi Sharks also advanced to the quarter finals after beating fellow second tier side Modern Coast Rangers 1 – 0 with Ibrahim Kitawi scoring the only goal.
After Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards’ exits earlier on, Thika United, another KPL side followed suit with a 0 – 1 loss to second tier side KCB.
The league and cup action will now take a break to allow the national team time to prepare for the 2017 AFCON qualifier against Zambia on Saturday 3 September.
