Luka Modric’s late strike earned Real Madrid a 2 – 1 win over Granada in the La Liga clash played on Sunday 7 February at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes.
Heading to the game, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane called on his charges to give a strong start to the game and that was well heeded with Cristiano Ronaldo making a 14th minute attempt that went wide.
Real Madrid were all over save for a few pockets of resistance form the hosts but that lasted just for a few minutes as soon after Karim Benzema fired home from Dan Carvajal’s cross from the right to hand Madrid the lead.
Granada could have pulled level ahead of the break but Raphael Varane block Ruben Rochina’s goal bound short and upon resumption, Granada came with more purpose and Isaac Success forced a good save from the Real keeper.
Karim Benzema had a good chance to extend the lead but Andres Fernandez stopped him on the 58th minute as Granada made a substitution, David Barral coming off for Moroccan international Youssef el Arabi.
El Arabi’s first contribution to the game, with the first touch was getting the equalizer. It all started with the referee getting into Luka Modric’s way and the Croatian lost the ball only for Rochina to get it and pass well to El Arabi to slot home.
El Arabi thought he had given his team the lead when he tapped home a Lomban header from a goal kick but he was rightly ruled offside and moments later Isaac Success had penalty claims waved away as he seemed to have been touched in the box by the Real goalkeeper.
Real Madrid took cue and on the 85th minute Mateo Kovacic picked out Luka Modric who with a wonderful shot from 20 yards found the top right corner to restore Real Madrid’s lead.
