German attacking midfielder Mario Gotze was widely believed to have favoured a reunion with former coach Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
However that transfer is in danger of falling away, since the Reds lost the Europa League final against Sevilla on Wednesday. That defeat means Liverpool don’t qualify for the Champions League next season.
“Liverpool have done absolutely everything in their power to make Gotze happen, throwing the kitchen sink at it,” a Goal.com source revealed.
“If the deal doesn’t happen, it won’t be because of a lack of effort from them, but because the player decided to go elsewhere.”
That quote reveals that Gotze might be waiting on clubs such as Real Madrid for their interest, a move that would give him both Champions League football, a bigger salary and of course football in the famed La Liga.
“They won’t get beat in terms of a bid or a package as they’re prepared to do whatever it takes to land him. He is taking a long time over giving them an answer though,” added the Goal source.
