The Nigeria Football Federation have confirmed they are paying new Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr the sum of $47,000 (N18.8 million at 400 naira to a dollar) as monthly salary.
There were reports shortly after the German was employed that he was going to be earning a massive monthly pay of $47,000 (considering what his predecessor earned),which raised eyebrows on why a supposed cash-strapped NFF would pay such a huge amount to a coach, when it is owing several other of its coaches.
Shehu Dikko, vice-president of the NFF, has however now confirmed that Rohr will earn the reported $47,000, but with a caveat that he is to pay the three assistants he wants to bring along with him from the said amount.
“We can’t say he alone is earning the $47,000, because that amount also includes the costs of the assistants he’s coming with,” said Dikko, in confirmation of the reported fee.
“So that $47,000 is the cost of like two to three people from the way I know it’s supposed to be. So if we say he is the only one earning the $47,000, it is a bit misleading because there are other people that might come to work with him and their fees are all embedded in that cost.”
When asked why the NFF is paying Rohr the salaries of his assistants, Dikko defended the position by saying it is easier for them to pay in such a way as they didn’t want to have a repeat of the problems they had with former coach Sunday Oliseh.
“It is easier because for the NFF to be signing contracts with individual assistants and then tomorrow they run into trouble, it is better they lump everything together with the man who is bringing them in and then he gives to them.
“The last time with Sunday Oliseh, he had a separate contract, while the assistant that he came with had a separate contract so that’s what we’re trying to avoid. So that $47,000 is the entire package as far as I know,” he added.
