Goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Bastian Schweinsteiger gave world champions, Germany a winning start at the ongoing Euro 2016 championships in France on Sunday night.
Despite the win, Germany were not too convincing for many but that they still got maximum points in their opening game at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Shkodran Mustafi’s 19th minute goal set the tone for the Germans who waited till the 90th minute to seal victory even as much thanks will have to also go to Jerome Boateng for his goal line clearances that denied Ukraine a share of the spoils in the Group C lash watched by over 50, 000 spectators.
There was apprehension from many while Germany failed to extend their lead, the theoretical risk always remained that they would throw it away as England had in Marseille the previous evening. But that was not the case with the world champions as late substitute Schweinsteiger added the gloss to the evening at the death from a superb Özil run and cross.
With the win, Germany are top in Group C even though Poland also won their opening game 1-0 over Northern Ireland.
