Republic of Ireland had a mission going into the round of 16 fixture against Euro 2016 hosts France and that is to revenge their cruel defeat in the hands of the Les Bleus who prevented them from going to the World Cup.
And that seem to be a queue when Robbie Brady tucked away an early penalty after Paul Pogba fouled Shane Long inside the box. The Boys in Green savoured that goal as they held a 1-0 first half lead.
France brought on Kingsley Coman in the second half and it sparked a turn-around in defense as he created space for Dimitri Payet to operate in the final third. That paid off as Manchester City full back Bacary Sagna delived a suptumous cross form Atletico Madrid man Antoine Griezmann to finish and make it 1-1.
The host took the lead as Griezmann latched on to a knock down from Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud to finish off with great ease. Ireland’s woes were compounded as Shane Duffy was sent off for bringing down Griezmann but nothing came out of the freekick.
