Former Director General of the Nigeria Sports commission Amos Adamu has called on the Nigeria Football Federation to throw their weight behind a Nigerian candidate for the office of the FIFA president.
FIFA is expected to conduct fresh polls in March 2016 to elect a new president to replace Sepp Blatter and two Nigerians in Segun Odebami and Orji Uzor Kalu have made their declared their interest to run for the biggest position in World Football.
Adamu in an exclusive interview with 366football.com believes it would be out of place if the NFF back a candidate from another country instead of a Nigerian.
“We have two Nigerians in Orji Uzor Kalu and Segun Odegbami that have come out to say they want to be the FIFA president. Who do we think is best suited for the post should be the begging question and not if they are qualified?
“I believe the Nigeria Football Association should support one of them. The NFF should call them together, look at their plans and then pick one person. The NFF can even make them work together.
“I think a Nigerian can be the FIFA president. Look at what is happening now; if people were afraid of Platini, he is no longer there. Or are they afraid of the man from Jordan -Ali?
“Nigeria has paid its dues in terms of football. We have played in World Cups, both men and women. We have won under age competitions so many times. So how come do we feel those who have signified their interest in running for the FIFA presidency are not qualified? If the men from Liberia Jordan are qualified, then a Nigerian is also qualified.
“Have u ever seen a Jordan side play at a FIFA tournament? But Nigeria has always been there. I think Nigeria should support any Nigerian that wants to be a FIFA president.
“I dont understand how the NFF will not support a Nigerian but rather campaign for somebody from Jordan or somebody from another region. I think Amaju and his people should call both men together and tell them, look this is what it takes to run for the presidency, can the two of you fuse together so that we have one person from Nigeria? Then we can go out there and campaign because if any of them wins, many Nigerians will benefit from it. This is what i think the NFF should do. They cannot say they will not support anybody. Odegbami is in Togo now and i believe he went there to canvass for support.” Adamu stated.
