Fans hoping to see Lionel Messi dazzle at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in Japan have been dealt a blow following an official statement from Barcelona that the Argentine has been ruled of of Thursday’s semi-final against Guangzhou Evergrande.
Barca added that the availability of Messi for the final, if the club pulls through will depend on the outcome of further medical tests on the renal colic issues the Argentine is currently suffering from.
The short statement on Baraca’s official website read: “Leo Messi will not be playing in today’s Club World Cup semi-final against Guangzhou Evergrande. The Argentinian striker is suffering from renal colic, a type of abdominal pain commonly caused by kidney stones, and will be absent for the 11:30am CET kick-off against the Asian champions. His future availability will depend on the outcome of further medical tests”.
Barca omitted Neymar in the starting line up against Guanzghou, with the Brazil star still short of full fitness despite returning to training this week following a groin injury.
