Emmanuel Emenike won the battle of Nigerians as he helped Fenerbahce beat Elderson Echejile’s AS Monaco by 2-1 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.
The 29-year-old who was on loan at English premier league side West Ham United returned to Istanbul with a point to prove to the club fans following his poor relationship with them before his departure to Al Ain.
And he has started on a bang in Europe’s biggest club competition. The Nigerian opened scoring for his side but another striker who badly wants redemption after failing on loan at Manchester United and Chelsea, Radamel Falcao level scores for Monaco.
With the second half keenly contested by both sides as they look to cease the initiative ahead of the second leg – it was Emenike that emerged the hero as he netted his score for the night to earn the vital winner.
Echejile was not dressed for the match as he was overlooked by manager Leonardo Jardim.
