Nigerian Paul Onuachu proved to be the difference as Danish side FC Midtjylland defeated Manchester United by 2-1 in the Europa Cup played this evening.
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal made a number of changes to the squad due to injuries. First choice goalkeeper David de Gea got injured during warm-up and was replaced by Sergio Romero while Memphis Depay made his first start in 2016 for the Red Devils.
The home side were pegged back by United’s possession game and Chris Smalling had the first real chance of the game when he connected a Daley Blind corner but he headed across goal instead of finding target.
Moments later, Anthony Martial had a shout for a penalty but it was waved away by the referee. Memphis fired in a perfectly hit freekick but Mikkel Andersen parried it to safety.
However, he was unable to do anything as Memphis received a cross from Jesse Lingard and fired pass him for the opening goal of the encounter. The goal brought the home side to live as they fought back and duly got the equalizer via Ugandan born Danish player Pione Sisto just before half-time.
Manchester United began the second half strong like they did with the first but Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard were guilty of wasting good chances.
Midtjylland’s Nigerian substitute Paul Onuachu punished the Red Devils as he struck a perfect shot from the edge of the box which sailed past Romero in goal.
