Barcelona vice president for Sports, Jordi Mestre has confirmed that the club intends to appeal against the red card shown to Mascherano against Eibar.
Mascherano was sent off by match official Del Cerro Grande in the 83rd minute of Sunday evening’s game at home to Eibar.
The Barcelona star could miss the Clasico as he risks a four-match ban but Mestre insists it is the club’s legal and moral duty to present an appeal in order to defend their player.
“We have not received the official sanction.
“But we have asked the player what happened and he says that it was no more than an act of frustration and that he never had any intention of insulting anyone. It is our legal and moral duty to present an appeal in order to defend the player.
“There is a difference between what he really said and what it says in the referee’s report.” Mestre told the Barcelona official website.
The Argentine was adjudged to have directed an insult towards one of referee Carlos del Cerro Grande’s assistants, having grown frustrated with the officials’ perceived leniency towards the visiting side.
