South African PSL champions beat one of Africa’s favourites on their own ground in the Caf Champions League on Saturday past midnight.
The Algerian giants and two-time former champions were expected to dominate the early exchanges and so it proved with Ismaïl Saïdi going close for the hosts in the third minute.
After Mabunda surrendered possession in the middle of the park, the hosts launched a swift counter through Saïdi who blazed Wayne Arendse before guiding his shot narrowly wide.
Sundowns goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands was the busier of the two shot-stoppers dealing well with Setif’s crosses into the box.
In the 33rd minute, the Brazilians, who were relying on counter-attacks, took a surprise lead when Tiyani Mabunda made room to strike from outside the box and he found the top corner.
Setif almost responded immediately as they got a shot on target moments after the restart, but Wayne Sandilands made the save.
