The mother of Stoke City striker Mame Diouf is reported to have died in the stampede at the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia that occurred in September 2015.
Saudi authorities put the death toll from last month’s crush near Mecca at 769, but international media basing on reports from the different countries on their citizenry, placed the toll at over 1000.
In a confirmation from Stoke City, the club said it would provide Diouf with all the support he needs at this extremely difficult time and that its thoughts and prayers are with the player, his family and friends following the death of his mother.
The stampede happened as two large groups of pilgrims converged as they were taking part in one of the Hajj’s major rites.
Diouf returned to the English Premier League when he joined Stoke on a free transfer after his Hannover contract expired.
