Argentina got a measure of revenge for the Copa America final loss to Chile when they came from behind to beat the Chileans 2 – 1 in Santiago, the very city they lost the Copa America final to Chile.
The two, facing off in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers early on Friday 25 March, had Chile going forward on just the 11th minute at the Estadio Nacional when Felipe Gutierrez powerfully placed Fabian Orellana’s out-swinging cross into the bottom-right corner of Sergio Romero’s net.
The Argentines recovered well to level matters through a spectacular Angel Di Maria strike. The PSG man took a wonderful, right-footed curling shot into Claudio Bravo’s far post after pouncing on a loose ball just inside the box on the 20th minute.
The winner came only five minutes later with Lionel Messi the architect. The Barcelona man found space in the box and teed up Gabriel Mercado with a lobbed pass and Mercado did no mistake despite being under pressure, striking the ball past Claudio Bravo.
The win gives Argentina eight points from five games, five points behind leaders Ecuador. While Copa America champs Chile remain on seven.
