The Italian national team advanced to the quarter finals of the Euro 2016 tournament but in the process served the perfect revenge over Spain for the 4 – 0 loss in the Euro 2012 final when Spain won their second straight title on 1st July 2012.
Giorgio Chiellini was among a few players in the current team that featured in the final and then it was not so good for him as he was withdrawn on the 21st minute but this time round, he stayed on and scored the opener before Graziano Pelle wrapped it with a last minute goal.
Speaking after the match, Chiellini described the win as revenge for the loss four years ago and termed it a deserved win as the Azzuri got a first win over Spain in five years.
The loss, for Spain, ended the dominance they have had in the tournament over the past eight years and Chiellin will be celebrating it all the way as they look to the next stage.
“We deserved this win. We could have killed the game off earlier.
“After years of Spain dominating, we have been able to get some revenge. This is just the beginning, we will enjoy this victory but there is still a long way to go until the end. The best is to come.” He said.
