Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo who jumped to the defense of the club’s playing staff who have also been blamed for the poor run of results which led to the sacking of head coach Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea’s disastrous start to the season sees them 16th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone forcing the Blues to sack Mourinho on Thursday just six months after guiding the club to their first Premier League glory in five years.
Speaking to Chelsea TV on the eve of the announcement of Mourinho’s departure reacted to media reports that the players have not done enough.
“The owner was forced to make what was a tough decision for the good of the club. Make no mistake about it, Chelsea football club -one of the biggest club is one point above relegation in the English Premier league and that’s not good enough. Anybody, any fan and those who are not fans who love the club or have any affiliation to the club can understand that this club is in trouble and something needed to be done.
“I think people need to understand that essentially this group of players are the same set that won the League and the League Cup last season and they did it in style by showing commitment, shedding tears and blood when needed. They played to instruction. They adhered to everything the manager asked them to do. So I think it’s very easy to make that kind of inference but its not one that the club accepts.
“Obviously we know now that the players have the responsibility to go out there and prove everybody wrong and show a certain level of commitment to the decision that has been made tonight (Thursday) and to try and get the club up the league table that’s what they were supposed to and i believe that’s what they’ve been trying to do.” Emenalo stated.
On what plans the club have as regards appointing a new manager in the time for the busy Christmas season, the Chelsea chief added;
“You are not a big club if you don’t have a contingency plans for situations like this. I think we are a big club that have quality coaches embedded within the club and i think we will be okay for Saturday. We will have competent people come up and help with the preparation for the game on Saturday. Make no mistake about it, the club is working vigorously and actively to make sure that the situation regards to the managerial appointment is taken care of as soon as possible.”
