The heroics of the DR Congo team at the last African Nations Championships, CHAN has been rewarded by the country’s President, Joseph Kabila.
President Kabila hosted the victorious team on Tuesday at the State House; decorating the Leopards football team with gold medals. He also gave each player a Toyota Prado Jeep thought to worth about $24,000 USD.
Last Sunday, the Democratic Republic Of Congo confirmed their dominance beating Mali 3-0 in the final in Rwanda and thus emerging as the first team to win the CHAN tournament twice having won the inaugural edition back in 2009 in Ivory Coast.
DR Congo Sports Minister Dennis Kambyai while thanking the players for being good ambassadors yet again, announced that they will be going on a trophy tour across the country.
“For the tour, we will be in the 24 districts tomorrow (10th February). And will land in the Martyrs Stadium, “the minister said. Leopards should then make a tour across the provinces.”
He added that player Heritier Luvumbu, who got injured against Rwanda would receive treatment abroad, something that has been arranged and accepted by the head of state.
Previously seen as a title challenger, Nigeria’s home-based Eagles failed to live to their billing crashing out in the group stage of the tournament- which is only open to footballers who play in their own local leagues.
