Arsenal’s Petr Cech has emerged as the winner of the Golden Glove award given to the best goalkeeper in the English Premier League at the end of the season.
Cech with 16 clean sheets in the course of the season narrowly beat Manchester United’s David de Gea to the top award as the own goal by Chris Smalling denied him of snapping the top prize.
De Gea came teasingly close to matching Cech’s 16 clean sheets on Tuesday during United’s postponed fixture against Bournemouth, but a last-minute own goal by Smalling ensured that it was Arsenal’s stopper who collected the prize after the Gunners’ 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.
Cech before now has won the award three times with Chelsea before moving to the Emirates for £10m last summer.
He conceded just 31 goals in 34 Premier League appearances this term as Arsenal finished second in the table.
De Gea, Kasper Schmeichel and Joe Hart were tied for second with 15 clean sheets each.
