The Uganda national team clinched a historic 14th CECAFA Senior Challenge title after beating Rwanda 1 – 0 in a hard fought final staged at the Addis Ababa Stadium on Saturday 5 December.
Ceaser Okhuti scored the all important goal on the 15th minute when he stole in to head Dennis Okot’s cross that was missed by the entire Rwanda defence.
From then it was a game of hard tackles and at some points in the match tempers almost flared as Rwanda attacked ion search of the leveler with Uganda holding on to bag the title.
Uganda first won the title in 1973 then went on to add another 12 in 1976, 1977, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 before adding the 14th on Saturday.
In the third place play off clash staged at the same venue, hosts Ethiopia overcame Sudan on post match penalties after a 1 – 1 draw.
Elias Mamo scored the opening goal for Ethiopia on the 68th minute with a wonderful dipping shot after picking a pass from Gatoch Panom but soon after, Walahedin Yagoub leveled matters to send the tie to post match penalties.
Ethiopia converted all their five kicks while Sudan’s Atahir Babikir, the tournament’s top scorer missed after his penalty was saved by goalkeeper Ydenekachew Kidane.
