Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Santi Cazorla is likely to miss the start of the new season as he is currently behind on fitness.
The Spanish international has only played 88 minutes of football since the end of November last year but the club still managed to finish second just behind unexpected champions Leicester City.
Cazorla who missed the most of last term due to an injury ravaged season lasted 45 minutes in the Gunners 3-1 pre-season win over CD Guadalajara.
However, Wenger claims that the Malaga midfielder is unlikely to play in the team in the opening fixture of the premier league.
The Frenchman told reporters: “At the moment he is not completely there on the fitness front. That’s why I took him off at half-time.
“He’s a bit behind the others physically but I think he will be alright, maybe not on Aug. 15, but at the end of August he should be alright.”
Another Arsenal star, Per Mertesacker picked up a knee injury and will be out for up to five months which has led Wenger into a search for a replacement and currently the Frenchman is eyeing former Manchester United defender Johnny Evans.
Arsenal begins their premier League campaign against Liverpool on August 14.
