Former South Africa wing back Bradley Carnell has backed Shakes Mashaba’s squad to do the business against Gambia in their Afcon qualifier on June 4.
The striking department has the least experience, quality and the most surprises in selection.
“Well, looking at the strikers, I think (Thamsanqa) Gabuza has a point to prove. For me he deserves to be there after showing what he can do in the Caf competitions with Pirates,” Carnell told Goal.com
“Look, he (Gabuza) was left behind when Ndoro was doing well. But now it’s a chance to show why he remains a viable option for the national team,” he said.
Gabuza inclusion has received criticism because he’s been sitting on the bench for Orlando Pirates lately. However the striker was a key option for Bafana earlier in the year.
“For me, (Sibusiso) Vilakazi is not an out-and-out striker. He is more of a number 10. He flourishes behind the main striker – playing a creative role,” added Carnell.
However Vilakazi has been criticized all round for his poor form with Bidvest Wits since his return from injury. Supporters would feel that it would only be a matter of time since his class will rise to the surface. Then there’s the surprise selection of striker Thobani Mncwango.
“Thobani has showed throughout the season what he is capable of. He has impressed and I think he deserves to be there,” the Free State Stars assistant coach told Goal.
”I would like to wish the boys all the best against Gambia.”
