Former Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello says that it is ‘crazy’ Italian legends Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini never won the FIFA Ballon d’Or.”
The two players were used as reference to defenders by managers across the world for the sublime manager they carried out their duties on and off the pitch.
The former England boss told Calciomercato.com in an exclusive chat, that it was one snub he cannot let go of.
“The Ballon d’Or is a strange award, as it almost always ends up in the hands of a striker, because goalscorers light up the imagination,” noted Capello.
“If I think that Baresi and Maldini never won the Ballon d’Or, then it’s just crazy.”
However, Italian defender Fabio Cannavarro won the award after he marshelled the Azzurri backline to win the 2006 World Cup which also earned him a move to Real Madrid.
